Thankful for Healthy Hair, Skin & Nails: Cold-Weather Beauty Tips from Beauty School

Dry air, chilly mornings, and holiday plans are here! Our students and instructors share easy cold-weather tips to keep your skin, hair, nails, and beard healthy all November long in Northern Colorado.

Once the furnace kicks on and the first frost hits Windsor, our clients start walking in with the same complaints: tight skin, static-y hair, peeling cuticles and chapped lips. Colorado’s low humidity and high elevation are tough on all of it, and the season only gets drier from here.

The good news is that a few small changes make a big difference. These are the same habits we teach on our clinic floor, broken down by the area of beauty our students study.

Our Cold-Weather Survival Guide

Give your skin a winter wardrobe

From our Esthetician program

  • Switch to a gentler cleanser. Foaming and stripping cleansers that felt fine in summer can leave skin tight and flaky now. A cream or gel cleanser is kinder.
  • Moisturize on damp skin. Applying moisturizer within a minute of washing helps lock in water before the dry air pulls it out.
  • Keep wearing sunscreen. Our elevation means stronger UV exposure year-round, and snow reflects sunlight back at your face.
  • Exfoliate less, not more. Flaky skin is tempting to scrub, but over-exfoliating damages the skin barrier. Once or twice a week is plenty.

Tame the static and dryness in your hair

From our Cosmetology and Hair Stylist programs

  • Add a weekly deep conditioning treatment to put back the moisture that dry indoor heat takes out.
  • Turn down your hot tools and always use a heat protectant. Dry hair is more fragile, and high heat makes breakage worse.
  • Don’t head out with wet hair in freezing temperatures. Wet hair is at its weakest, and the cold makes it brittle.
  • Try a silk or satin pillowcase to cut down on friction, frizz and static overnight.

Protect your hands and nails

From our Nail Technician program

  • Use cuticle oil every day. It takes ten seconds and is the single best defense against cracked, peeling cuticles.
  • Moisturize after every hand wash, especially during cold and flu season when you’re washing more often.
  • Wear gloves outside and when doing dishes or cleaning.
  • Keep nails a little shorter through winter so they’re less likely to snag and break.

Don’t forget the beard

From our Barber program

  • Use beard oil daily. Dry air hits the skin under a beard too, which leads to itching and flakes.
  • Wash with a gentle beard wash instead of regular bar soap, which can strip natural oils.
  • Keep up with regular trims so you look sharp for holiday photos and family gatherings.

What We’re Thankful For

This time of year, we’re especially grateful for our students, who show up with passion and creativity every day. We’re grateful for every client who sits in our chairs and trusts our students to learn on them. And we’re grateful to the Windsor community for supporting a small school where every student gets real one-on-one attention.

Thank you for being part of the Designing Beauty Academy family.
